USING OUR COLLECTIONS
The material in our collections is publicly accessible and in most cases available for reproduction. Our collection items have been used in a wide variety of books, articles, documentary films, educational programming, and art projects. Use or reproduction may be subject to fees and copyright restrictions, as outlined below.
LICENSING FILM FOOTAGE
To license film footage from our collections, submit a request form and review our policies and licensing agreement. We have several access points to view digitized copies of our films online:
-Finding aids with film logs for KCRA (part 1, part 2 , part 3) and KOVR
-Hundreds of digitized films on our Internet Archive page
-Video Archive Masters Subject Catalog, which lists the most frequently requested footage that has already been digitized.

PHOTOGRAPH REPRODUCTION AND USE
Digitized photographs from our collection can be searched on our online catalog. Please use this form to submit orders for photo reproductions.
CSH charges fees for digital copies of images and you will receive digital files only. We do not make prints. We charge a $25 scanning fee for every 10 images (fee waived if the image is already scanned in high resolution or if a JPEG is acceptable), plus use fees that range from $10-$200 per image depending on how you intend to use them. Images in the public domain or those that fall under fair use only incur the scanning fees. See a copy of our photographic reproduction fee schedule for more information.
ARCHIVAL REPRODUCTION AND USE
CSH staff can make paper or digital copies of archival materials as long as duplication does not violate U.S. copyright law; is not restricted by prior agreement with a donor; and will not damage or create a substantial risk of damage to the originals. Reproduction is subject to fees. Because the Center’s holdings vary widely in terms of rarity, condition, and format, each reproduction request will be reviewed by staff. As per copyright law, no more than 20 percent of a collection / printed item / publication / exhibit can be photocopied or reproduced. Scanners and digital cameras (including your smartphone’s camera) are allowed in the reading room upon staff approval.
PERMISSIONS AND CITATIONS
All requests to publish or quote from private manuscripts must be submitted in writing to CSH. Permission for publication is given on behalf of CSH as the owner of the physical items and is not intended to include or imply permission of the copyright holder, which must also be obtained by the patron. No permission is necessary to publish or quote from public documents.
Patrons wishing to use reproductions of CSH holdings for publications, websites, exhibits, displays, moving image productions, advertisements, etc., will be required to complete a Copyright Understanding Agreement and pay all appropriate use fees. Proper citation must be given in each instance of use. Below is the Center’s preferred citation:
